DO NOT TRY TO MAPQUEST OR USE A GPS FOR DIRECTIONS BECAUSE THEY WILL BE WRONG. From Nottoway Your trip to the swamps will start in the little community of Bayou Sorrel. Go south toward White Castle on Hwy 1 for one mile and turn right on Hwy 993. You'll be crossing through cane fields; this land is the natural ridge that before the construction of the levees, separated the Mississippi River from the Atchafalaya Basin. After four miles turn right on Hwy 404. As you go on Hwy 404 the land will get lower and the fields will be replaced by hardwood forest and then by swampland. All this forest and swamps were part of the eastern edge of the historical Atchafalaya Basin, before the levees were built. After six miles Hwy 404 will end and you'll need to turn right onto Hwy 75, if you follow this road for four miles, you'll be on Bayou Sorrel. The meeting point is in Dale's Trading Post, the third gas station on the right. From Baton Rouge If you are coming from I-10 and Baton Rouge, go south on Hwy 1. In Plaquemine turn right at the red light between McDonald's and Burger King, that'll be Hwy 75. Follow Hwy 75 for 6.5 miles until it ends, you'll see a red flashing light and a stop sign, turn left. Follow this road for five miles and you'll be in Bayou Sorrel. The meeting point is in Dale's Trading Post, the first gas station on the left. From New Orleans Take I-10 West. Take exit 182 toward Donaldsonville. Turn left at LA-22 (south). Follow Hwy 22 south (a left) and take a left again on Hwy 70. Go over Sunshine bridge and after the bridge stay in the right lane toward Donaldsonville (it will become Hwy 3089). Go through Donaldsonville and Hwy 3089 will become Hwy 1. Follow Hwy 1 to White Castle. Go through White Castle and take the first left after White Castle onto Hwy 993. After four miles, turn right onto Hwy 404. After six miles, Hwy 404 ends; turn right onto Hwy 75. Follow Hwy 75 for four miles and you'll be on Bayou Sorrel. The meeting point is Dale's Trading Post, the third gas station on the right.
